Connecting an analogue phone with an ATA adapter

mariaR95 07 Nov 2025, 09:10

If you have a traditional analogue phone you want to keep, an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter) bridges it onto your Free SIP Account. Supported adapters include the Grandstream HandyTone range, Cisco/Linksys units and Poly ATAs.

  1. Connect the ATA to your network, and plug your analogue phone into the ATA's FXS/phone port.
  2. Open the ATA's web admin page (check the label or manual for its default address).
  3. On the line settings enter the SIP proxy sip.transcom.net, your user ID and password, and register port 5060/5061.
  4. Save and reboot the ATA.

Pick up the analogue handset — you should get a dial tone from FreeVoIP. This is a low-cost way to give an existing cordless base or a much-loved desk phone a second life on VoIP.
