Total cost of ownership: owning versus leasing

The Owned Engine is a one-time purchase of £665 with no recurring fees. Understanding what that buys is worth doing before you choose between owning and Transcom's leased options.

When you own the engine you run it on your own infrastructure, under your own TAG, and settle caught domains with Nominet directly at your own registrar rate. There is no monthly software charge — your only ongoing costs are your server and your Nominet settlements.

Leasing (a Dedicated Server at £149/month, or TAG Owner Access at £89/month) avoids the upfront outlay and hands the setup and hosting to us. Owning makes sense once your catching is steady enough that the one-time price is cheaper than months of lease fees, and you are comfortable running your own Linux server.
