Deep Packet Filter vs browser ad-blockers and VPNs
People often ask how Deep Packet Filter (DPF) differs from a browser ad-blocker extension or a VPN. They solve different problems.
Versus a browser ad-blocker:
- A browser extension only protects the single browser it's installed in. It does nothing for other browsers, apps, smart TVs, consoles or IoT devices.
- DPF works at the DNS layer, so it filters adverts, trackers and telemetry across every app and device on your network — including in-app and smart-TV ads a browser blocker can never see.
- There's nothing to install and nothing to keep updated per device.
Versus a VPN:
- A VPN reroutes and encrypts your traffic to change your apparent location or add privacy on untrusted networks — it does not, by itself, strip adverts, malware and tracking.
- DPF doesn't tunnel your traffic; it changes which domains resolve. That means no added latency from routing through a distant server — in fact, by removing unrequested data it tends to make connections faster.
