Managed vs unmanaged hosting: what's the difference?

Transcom 27 Jun 2026, 07:56

With a traditional (unmanaged) hosting account you rent space on a server and everything else is your job — installing software, applying updates, configuring DNS and email, renewing certificates and fixing things when they break. You get a control panel and a login, and the rest is down to you.

Managed Hosting flips that around. You don't get a control panel to learn or a server to babysit; you get a team that runs the platform for you. We handle the setup, the updates, the monitoring and the day-to-day maintenance, and if something needs doing, we do it. As we put it, it's the difference between renting hosting and having a hosting team on call.

Choose unmanaged if you enjoy the technical side and want hands-on control. Choose Managed Hosting if you simply want a fast, reliable website and a single predictable monthly bill, without ever touching a panel.
