WHOIS Privacy and transferring a domain

Privacy interacts with transfers, so plan ahead:

  1. Before requesting a transfer out, check whether the gaining registrar needs to read your contact email from WHOIS. If so, consider temporarily disabling privacy so the transfer/approval emails reach you.
  2. Obtain your auth / EPP code (for gTLDs) or arrange the IPS tag change (for .uk).
  3. Complete the transfer.
  4. Re-enable privacy at the new registrar once the name has moved.

A note on locks: a 60-day change-of-registrant lock applies to many gTLDs, and enabling/disabling privacy on some registries counts as a contact change. If you're planning a transfer, avoid unnecessary contact edits in the run-up to it.
