How WHOIS Privacy works

WHOIS Privacy works by substituting privacy-protected contact details for yours in the public record, while the registry still knows you're the real registrant.

There are two common mechanisms: - Redaction — mandated for individuals under GDPR on most gTLDs, personal fields are simply withheld and replaced with a note that data is redacted for privacy. - Proxy / privacy service — the service's own contact details (or generic privacy placeholders) appear in WHOIS, and any legitimate correspondence sent to those contacts is forwarded to you.

Importantly, privacy is a display layer, not a change of ownership. You remain the legal registrant; you keep full control of the domain, DNS, transfers and renewals. If a court order or a valid legal request requires it, the underlying data can still be disclosed through the proper channels — privacy shields you from casual scraping, not from lawful process.
