Auto-renew was on but the domain still expired

I had auto-renew toggled on for a .co.uk and it expired anyway — got the 'your domain has expired' email out of nowhere. Turned out the card on file had expired the month before and there was no warning that auto-renew couldn't run. Please warn people when the payment method is dead.
