.uk domains and Nominet: what's different
As a Nominet-accredited registrar we register .uk names directly with the UK national registry. .uk has a few characteristics worth knowing:
- Second levels: the common ones are .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk, plus .ltd.uk and .plc.uk (restricted to registered companies). The short .uk (no second level) is also available.
- Registrant verification: Nominet may ask you to verify your registrant details. If verification fails the domain can be suspended, so keep your contact data accurate.
- Data opt-out: individuals (not businesses) can opt their address out of the public WHOIS at no charge under Nominet rules.
- IPS tag: transfers of .uk work by changing the domain's registrar 'tag' rather than by EPP/auth code. Our tag is used to bring names in, and we release the tag to move a name out.
- Terms: .uk domains register for 1–10 year terms.
Nominet is generally fast — a .uk registration is usually live within seconds. If a .uk name shows as suspended for verification, contact support and we'll walk you through clearing it.
